Margaret Pollard Marks, M.D., a daughter, sister, physician, and former pediatric endocrinologist remembered for her extraordinary intelligence, compassion, and humor, passed away on August 29, 2026, from complications related to diabetes. She had recently celebrated her 37th birthday.
Margaret was born July 15, 1989, in Birmingham, Alabama, to Charles and Tanya Marks. She spent her early childhood in Mountain Brook with her four sisters: Marty, Morgan, Amanda, and Hastings, affectionately known as Lucy.
The Marks sisters shared a childhood filled with family traditions and adventures. Margaret spent time at Lake Martin, competed on the Mountain Brook Country Club swim team, danced at Steeple Arts, played soccer on teams coached by her father, and enjoyed family vacations to John’s Island. Summers brought experiences at Camp Skyline and Camp Greystone, creating memories that would remain part of the family story.
Margaret attended Highlands School before continuing at Oak Mountain Middle School and Oak Mountain High School after her family moved to Oak Mountain. Following graduation, she chose Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, rather than following her sister Marty to the University of Alabama.
At Furman, Margaret flourished academically and personally. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree while majoring in Neuroscience and Spanish. During the summer of 2008, she participated in a Spanish-language immersion program at Universidad Internacional in Cuernavaca, Mexico, where she also worked as an infirmary assistant at an orphanage. She was active in Alpha Delta Pi and volunteered through the Furman Panhellenic Council.
In 2012, Margaret began postgraduate studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Heersink School of Medicine. She graduated summa cum laude and earned her medical degree in 2016.
Those who studied and worked alongside Margaret remembered her remarkable intellect, but also her humility. Classmates and professors sometimes described her as the smartest person in the room, yet she never carried herself with arrogance. Her ability to combine medical brilliance with a quick sense of humor became a defining part of her personality.
Margaret completed her pediatric residency at Children’s of Alabama before pursuing a fellowship in Endocrinology and Diabetes there. She quickly distinguished herself and served as Chief Fellow. After completing her fellowship, she became an Assistant Professor in the Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham.
Patients and colleagues remembered Margaret for more than her medical expertise. She brought warmth, compassion, humor, and genuine care to the people she encountered. Her ability to make others feel comfortable while providing thoughtful medical care left a lasting impression.
Margaret is survived by her parents, Charles and Tanya Marks; sisters Marty McElrath (Chris), Morgan, Amanda Walker (D.K.), and Hastings Marks (Connor O’Brien); aunts Margaret Porter (Kip) and Diana Arnold (Thomas); uncle Steve Sanderson (Darlene); nephews Wyatt McElrath and Porter Walker; nieces Holland Walker and Hastings O’Brien; and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her uncle Randy Marks and grandparents Charles Caldwell and Jeanne “Mimi” Marks and Clay and Amanda Sanderson.
Her family will hold a private memorial service.
At only 37, Margaret leaves behind a remarkable legacy of scholarship, medicine, family, friendship, and service. Her life touched countless people, and her memory will remain especially strong among the patients she cared for, colleagues she inspired, and family members who loved her deeply.
As her loved ones remember her life, the words from Don McLean’s “Vincent” offer a poignant reflection: “This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.”
